What is lignum vitae? ***
Lignum vitae is the heartwood of species of the genus Guaiacum, the trees of which are also called guayacan. The name is Latin for "wood of life", and derives from its medicinal uses. Other names are palo santo, holy wood, greenheart and ironwood (one of many). The wood is obtained chiefly from Guaiacum officinale and Guaiacum sanctum, both small, slow growing trees. This wood has a density between 1.28 and 1.37g per cu.cm., so it will sink in water. It is a hard, dense and durable wood, the most dense of any known wood. The wood was important for uses requiring strength, weight and hardness. Due to its weight, cricket bails, particularly 'heavy bails' used in windy conditions, are sometimes made of this wood. The wood also has seen widespread historical usage in mortars and pestles and for wood carvers' mallets.
Why are these picks so expensive?
That is indeed a great question. A person may choose to purchase a fine hand made instrument for $500.00 and above OR that same person might choose to buy a cheap one for $70.00. What is the difference? They both play right? The simple answer is this... The cheap instrument is constructed out of cheap woods with very little attention paid to detail. The sound quality of this instrument will never be near as good as the higher end model.
All of the wood picks that come out of the shop are hand made out of the finest quality woods that we can get. These picks are then carefully carved, shaped, smoothed and then they are all polished to a great luster. These picks are all contoured to fit very comfortably between the fingers and play very well.
About how long will these picks last?
Under normal use, these picks should have a long playing life. Please you must keep in mind however that these picks are made out of wood and therefore not as resilient as a cheap plastic pick, but the sound quality more that makes up the difference.
I like to use 'Fender' style picks. Sometimes while I'm playing my acoustic amplified, I hear the pick louder that I hear the ringing of the notes I'm playing. THAT IS SO ANNOYING!! Do these picks do that?
If you are referring to "pick click" then 'no' they don't. That sound that you say is so annoying as actually the plastic pick swinging back and slapping the string a second time.
Are there any "handling" charges applied to orders?
The simple answer is 'yes'. The shipping breakdown is this: U.S. Mail ground is 0.80 cents and the bal. of 0.20 cents is the handling fee. That covers the cost of the padded envelope and fuel costs.
